How the method works

Average the parents' heights, then add 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) for a boy or subtract 2.5 inches for a girl. That is the mid-parental (Tanner) formula clinics have used for decades. It is a genetic midpoint, not a promise: roughly 2 in 3 kids finish within about 2 inches of it, and almost all within 3.5 inches (8.5 cm).

How accurate is the mid-parental method?
It is the standard first-pass estimate: about two thirds of children end up within roughly 2 inches of it, and nearly all within about 3.5 inches. Bone-age testing by a doctor is the only meaningfully tighter prediction.
My toddler is in the 90th percentile. Will they be tall?
Percentiles in the first 2 years shuffle a lot as babies find their own curve. Consistent tracking along one curve after age 2 to 3 says more than any single measurement.
When do kids stop growing?
Girls typically finish within a couple of years after their growth spurt, around 14 to 16; boys later, around 16 to 18. Concerns about a child falling off their curve belong with your pediatrician.
